After the Visitor Information Station (VIS) was destroyed by Hurricane Ike, the building shown here was placed near the site to serve as a temporary VIS. The facility includes an information desk staffed by refuge volunteers and a Nature Store managed by the Friends of Anahuac Refuge. Every effort is made to have the VIS open on weekends from 8 am to 4 pm, and every day during spring bird migration. Exact dates are posted on this website once known.
The VIS is a good resource for refuge visitors. The volunteer staff makes every effort to be knowledgeable to provide you with information concerning walking and driving routes to see birds, alligators, butterflies, and other wildlife, or where to go fishing, crabbing, or sightseeing on the refuge. Free coffee is available to all our visitors. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase.
A wildlife sightings board is located near the VIS entrance on which visitors share sightings they have experienced. Check it out on your way into the refuge. As you leave the refuge, be sure to share your sightings on the board as well.
